Sanitarium was founded in 1898 in Melbourne, Australia, by Edward Halsey, a baker and Seventh-day Adventist. The company was established to provide healthy, plant-based foods in line with the church's health principles. The first product was Granola, a cereal made from whole grains.

In 1900, Sanitarium expanded to New Zealand, establishing a factory in Auckland. Over the years, the company has grown significantly, with multiple manufacturing facilities and a wide range of products.
