Salif Keita
Salif Keita (born August 25, 1949) is a prominent Malian singer-songwriter and a member of the Keita dynasty, which traces its lineage back to Sundiata Keita, the founder of the Mali Empire. Known as the "Golden Voice of Africa," Keita is celebrated for his unique blend of traditional West African music with influences from jazz, blues, and rock music.
Early Life
Salif Keita was born in the village of Djoliba, located on the banks of the Niger River in Mali. He was born with albinism, a condition that led to social ostracism and discrimination in his community. Despite these challenges, Keita pursued his passion for music, which was considered inappropriate for someone of noble lineage.
Musical Career
Keita's musical journey began in the 1960s when he moved to Bamako, the capital of Mali. He joined the government-sponsored band, the Rail Band, which played at the Buffet Hotel de la Gare. In 1973, he left the Rail Band to join Les Ambassadeurs, another influential group. With Les Ambassadeurs, Keita gained international recognition, and the band was later renamed Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux.
In 1984, Keita moved to Paris, where he launched his solo career. His debut solo album, Soro, released in 1987, was a critical and commercial success. The album featured a fusion of traditional African sounds with modern musical elements, establishing Keita as a global music icon.
