Saint George Hospital University Medical Center (Arabic: مستشفى القديس جاورجيوس للروم الأرثوذكس or مستشفى القديس جاورجيوس الجامعي), also known locally as Al-Roum Hospital (Arabic: مستشفى الروم), is a historic and prominent teaching hospital located in the district of Rmeil, Beirut, Lebanon. Established in 1878, it is the oldest hospital in Lebanon and one of the country's leading medical institutions.
Overview
Saint George Hospital University Medical Center serves as a tertiary referral center and teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Balamand. It also maintains academic and cooperative ties with the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Toulouse and the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Poitiers in France.
The hospital operates from a T-shaped, fifteen-floor main building that currently accommodates approximately 200 beds. In 2005, a new, state-of-the-art building was inaugurated as part of an expansion initiative. A phased rehabilitation of the original 1968 structure is underway (Phase II), which is expected to add another 200 beds, increasing the hospital's total capacity to 400 beds upon completion.
