Sailor (pronunciation: /ˈseɪlər/) is a term used to describe a person who navigates waterborne vessels or assists as a crewmember in their operation and maintenance. The term can be applied to professional mariners, military personnel, and recreational sailors as well as to a variety of other uses.
Etymology
The word "sailor" comes from the Middle English word "sailour," which itself is derived from the Old French "sailleur." The term has been in use since at least the 14th century to refer to a person who works on a vessel that travels by water.
