Pharmacovigilance
Pharmacovigilance is the science and activities related to the detection, assessment, understanding, and prevention of adverse effects or any other drug-related problems. The goal of pharmacovigilance is to improve patient safety and ensure the benefits of a drug outweigh its risks.
History[edit]
The concept of Pharmacovigilance has been in existence since the 1960s, following the Thalidomide disaster which led to the establishment of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Programme for International Drug Monitoring.
Importance[edit]
Pharmacovigilance is crucial in the healthcare industry as it aids in the understanding of the safety profile of drugs. It helps in the detection of Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs), which can be severe and life-threatening. Early detection of ADRs can lead to changes in the drug's usage and dosage, or even its withdrawal from the market.
Methods[edit]
Pharmacovigilance employs several methods to collect data, including spontaneous reporting, cohort event monitoring, and the use of large databases. The data collected is then analyzed to identify new safety concerns and to confirm or refute suspected risks.
Organizations[edit]
Several organizations are involved in pharmacovigilance, including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Medicines Agency (EMA), and the WHO. These organizations work together to ensure the safety of drugs and to protect public health.
Challenges[edit]
Despite its importance, pharmacovigilance faces several challenges, including under-reporting of ADRs, lack of awareness among healthcare professionals, and the need for more robust and reliable data collection systems.
Future[edit]
The future of pharmacovigilance lies in the use of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to improve data collection and analysis. These technologies can help in the early detection of ADRs and in the prediction of potential safety concerns.
