SOD1

SOD1 (pronounced as S-O-D-one), also known as Superoxide Dismutase 1, is a gene that provides instructions for making an enzyme called superoxide dismutase, which is found in all cells of the body. This enzyme plays a crucial role in protecting cells from damage caused by harmful particles called free radicals.

Etymology

The term SOD1 is an abbreviation for Superoxide Dismutase 1. The term 'superoxide' refers to the superoxide anion (O2−), which is a byproduct of the normal cellular process. 'Dismutase' refers to the enzyme's ability to accelerate the conversion of superoxide into less harmful molecules.

Function

The SOD1 enzyme neutralizes harmful superoxide radicals in cells by converting them into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen. This process is essential for preventing damage to cells and maintaining their normal function.

Related Terms
