Rutgers School of Dental Medicine
Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM), formerly known as the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), is the dental school of Rutgers University. It is located in Newark, New Jersey, and is part of Rutgers' Division of Biomedical and Health Sciences. RSDM is one of the two dental schools in the state of New Jersey.
History[edit]
RSDM was founded in 1956 as the New Jersey State Dental School. In 1965, it became part of the newly formed College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (CMDNJ). In 1981, CMDNJ was renamed to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. In 2013, UMDNJ was merged with Rutgers University, and the dental school became the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine.
Academics[edit]
RSDM offers a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree, postgraduate training in nine dental specialties, and a Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene. The school also offers a combined DMD/PhD program in collaboration with the Rutgers Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
Clinical Services[edit]
RSDM operates several clinics that provide comprehensive dental care to adults and children. These clinics offer services in general dentistry, pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, and oral surgery.
Research[edit]
Research at RSDM is focused on oral and systemic diseases, biomaterials and tissue engineering, and health services and community health. The school is home to several research centers, including the Center for Oral Infectious Diseases.
Notable Alumni[edit]
Notable alumni of RSDM include William C. Darragh, a former president of the American Dental Association, and Cecile A. Feldman, the current dean of the school.
