Roger Marshall
Roger W. Marshall (born August 9, 1960) is an American politician and physician serving as the junior United States Senator from Kansas. A member of the Republican Party, Marshall was first elected to the Senate in 2020. Prior to his tenure in the Senate, he represented Kansas's 1st congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 2017 to 2021.
Early Life and Education
Roger Marshall was born in El Dorado, Kansas, and grew up in Butler County. He attended Butler Community College before transferring to Kansas State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry. Marshall then went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. After completing his residency in obstetrics and gynecology, Marshall served in the Army Reserve, achieving the rank of captain.
Medical Career
Before entering politics, Marshall had a long career in medicine. He practiced in Great Bend, Kansas, where he was affiliated with the Great Bend Regional Hospital. Over his 25 years in medicine, Marshall delivered more than 5,000 babies, making him a well-known figure in his community.
Political Career
U.S. House of Representatives
Marshall's political career began when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2016, defeating incumbent Tim Huelskamp in the Republican primary. During his tenure in the House, Marshall served on the Committee on Agriculture and the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. He focused on issues relevant to his district, including agriculture, rural healthcare, and veterans' affairs.
U.S. Senate
In 2020, Marshall ran for the United States Senate seat vacated by retiring Senator Pat Roberts. He won the Republican primary against Kris Kobach and subsequently defeated Democratic nominee Barbara Bollier in the general election. As a Senator, Marshall has continued to focus on agriculture, healthcare, and defense. He has been an advocate for conservative policies, supporting tax cuts, border security, and pro-life legislation.
Personal Life
Marshall resides in Great Bend, Kansas, with his wife, Laina, with whom he has four children. He is known for his involvement in community and church activities.
