Rochester

Rochester is a city located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It is the third-largest city in Minnesota and the largest city located outside the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2020, the city has a population of 121,395.

History

Rochester was founded in 1854 and incorporated as a city in 1858. The city is named after Rochester, New York, the native city of the city's founders.

Geography

Rochester is located in southeastern Minnesota. The city has a total area of 54.75 square miles (141.9 km2), of which 54.59 square miles (141.4 km2) is land and 0.16 square miles (0.41 km2) is water.

Economy

Rochester's economy is dominated by one entity: the Mayo Clinic. The clinic and its associated enterprises are the largest employer in the city, employing over 30,000 people.

Education

Rochester is home to a number of higher education institutions, including the University of Minnesota Rochester and Rochester Community and Technical College.

Transportation

Rochester is served by Rochester International Airport and a public transit system operated by the Rochester Public Transit.

Notable people

Several notable individuals hail from Rochester, including LeRoy Collins, former governor of Florida, and Shjon Podein, former professional ice hockey player.
