Robert Farrar Capon (October 26, 1925 – September 5, 2013) was an American Episcopal priest, author, and chef. A prolific writer, Capon authored twenty books, including the influential series on Jesus' parables, "The Kingdom and the Cross". His works often blend theological reflection with his passion for food and cooking.
Early Life and Education
Capon was born in Jackson Heights, New York. He attended Columbia University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in 1947. He later attended General Theological Seminary, where he received his Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree in 1950.
Career
Capon was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1949. He served in various parishes in New York and New Jersey, including Christ Church in Port Jefferson, New York, where he was rector for over 30 years.
In addition to his pastoral duties, Capon was a passionate cook and food writer. He wrote several books on the subject, including "The Supper of the Lamb" and "Food for Thought". His writings often combined theological insights with culinary wisdom, reflecting his belief that the pleasures of the table could offer spiritual nourishment.
Theology
Capon's theology was marked by a strong emphasis on grace and the unconditional love of God. He was known for his creative and often humorous interpretations of biblical texts, particularly the parables of Jesus. His "Kingdom and the Cross" series, which includes "The Parables of the Kingdom", "The Parables of Grace", and "The Parables of Judgment", is considered a significant contribution to contemporary Christian thought.
Personal Life and Death
Capon was married to his wife, Valerie, for over 60 years. They had six children together. Capon passed away on September 5, 2013, at the age of 87.
Legacy
