Ringo Starr
Ringo Starr
Richard Starkey, known professionally as Ringo Starr, was born on 7 July 1940 in Liverpool, England. He is an English musician, singer, songwriter, and actor who gained worldwide fame as the drummer for the Beatles. Starr occasionally sang lead vocals with the group, usually for one song on each album, including "With a Little Help from My Friends", "Yellow Submarine", and their cover of "Act Naturally". He also wrote and sang the Beatles' songs "Don't Pass Me By" and "Octopus's Garden", and is credited as a co-writer of others.
Early Life
Ringo Starr was born in the Dingle, an inner-city area of Liverpool. He was the only child of confectioners Richard Starkey and Elsie Gleave. Starr's early years were marked by severe illness and long hospitalizations, which caused him to miss a significant amount of schooling. He developed a love for drumming during his hospital stays, where he was encouraged to play percussion instruments as part of his therapy.
Career with the Beatles
In 1962, Starr replaced Pete Best as the drummer for the Beatles, joining John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison. His steady drumming and easygoing personality made him a perfect fit for the band. Starr's first recording session with the Beatles was on 4 September 1962, and he played on most of the band's recordings thereafter.
Solo Career
After the Beatles disbanded in 1970, Starr embarked on a successful solo career. His early solo hits include "It Don't Come Easy", "Photograph", and "You're Sixteen". Starr has released numerous albums over the decades, including Ringo (1973), Goodnight Vienna (1974), and Ringo 2012 (2012).
Acting Career
In addition to his music career, Starr has also pursued acting. He appeared in several films, including A Hard Day's Night (1964), Help! (1965), and Caveman (1981). He also narrated the first two series of the children's television program Thomas & Friends.
Personal Life
Starr married Maureen Cox in 1965, and they had three children: Zak, Jason, and Lee. The couple divorced in 1975. Starr married actress Barbara Bach in 1981. He is a grandfather and continues to be active in music and charity work.
Legacy
Ringo Starr was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Beatles in 1988 and as a solo artist in 2015. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest drummers in rock history and has influenced countless musicians.
