The Rh factor is a specific protein found on the surface of red blood cells. If your blood has the protein, you're Rh positive — if your blood lacks the protein, you're Rh negative.
Importance
The Rh factor is crucial in blood transfusion and pregnancy. In blood transfusion, the Rh factor can cause a potentially dangerous reaction if Rh-positive blood is transfused into a person with Rh-negative blood. During pregnancy, an Rh-negative mother can develop antibodies against Rh-positive baby which can lead to hemolytic disease of the newborn.
