Reuters
Reuters is an international news organization owned by Thomson Reuters. It employs around 2,500 journalists and 600 photojournalists in about 200 locations worldwide. Reuters provides news to newspapers, television and radio stations, websites, and mobile platforms.
History[edit]
Reuters was established in 1851 by Paul Julius Reuter in London. The company initially transmitted stock market quotations and news via carrier pigeons between London and Paris. In 1865, Reuters expanded into the far east, followed by South America in 1872. In 1923, Reuters began using radio to transmit news internationally.
Operations[edit]
Reuters operates in more than 200 cities in 94 countries in about 20 languages. In addition to news agency services, Reuters also provides financial data and IT services for businesses.
Ownership[edit]
Since 2008, Reuters has been a part of the Thomson Reuters Corporation, a Canadian multinational mass media and information firm.
Criticism and controversy[edit]
Reuters has been accused of bias in its reporting of issues such as the Israel-Palestine conflict, the Iran nuclear deal, and the Hong Kong protests. The agency has defended its coverage, stating that it adheres to a policy of neutrality and does not take sides in conflicts.
