Districts[edit]

Each state and union territory is divided into districts. As of 2021, there are a total of 733 districts in India. Each district is administered by a District Collector, who is an officer of the Indian Administrative Service.

Sub-Districts[edit]

Districts are further divided into sub-districts, which are known by different names in different states, such as tehsils, talukas, and mandals. These sub-districts are administered by a Tehsildar or Talukdar.

The sub-districts are further divided into villages and towns. Villages are the smallest administrative units in rural areas, while towns are the smallest units in urban areas. Each village is administered by a Gram panchayat, and each town is administered by a municipality.
