Radium-223

Radium-223 (pronunciation: RAY-dee-um-223) is a radioactive isotope used in the treatment of metastatic bone cancer. It is also known by its brand name, Xofigo.

Etymology

The term "Radium" is derived from the Latin word 'radius', meaning 'ray'. The number 223 refers to the atomic mass of this particular isotope of radium.

Usage

Radium-223 is used in the treatment of bone metastases in patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer. It works by mimicking calcium and binding to areas of increased bone turnover in metastatic deposits. The emitted alpha particles induce double-strand breaks in DNA, leading to cell death.
