Radial Aplasia

Radial aplasia (pronounced: /ˈreɪdiəl æˈpleɪziə/), also known as Radial Ray Deficiency or Radial Club Hand, is a rare congenital condition characterized by the underdevelopment or absence of the radius bone in the forearm. The term originates from the Latin words "radius" meaning spoke of a wheel and "aplasia" meaning lack of development.

Definition

Radial aplasia is a condition in which the radius, one of the two bones in the forearm, is underdeveloped or completely absent. This can result in a variety of physical abnormalities, including a shortened arm, a hand that is bent towards the thumb side, and possible absence or underdevelopment of the thumb.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of radial aplasia include a noticeably shorter forearm, a hand that is bent towards the thumb side (also known as radial deviation), and possible absence or underdevelopment of the thumb. Other symptoms may include limited mobility in the affected arm and hand, and in severe cases, the absence of the radius bone altogether.

Causes

The exact cause of radial aplasia is unknown, but it is believed to be due to a disruption in the normal development of the arm during the early stages of embryogenesis. Some studies suggest a possible genetic component, but more research is needed to confirm this.

Treatment

Treatment for radial aplasia varies depending on the severity of the condition. In mild cases, physical therapy and occupational therapy may be sufficient to improve function and mobility. In more severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to correct the deformity and improve function. This may include procedures such as osteotomy, bone grafting, and in some cases, prosthetics.
