An international series of ultramarathon races

RacingThePlanet is a series of ultramarathon races that take place in various remote and challenging locations around the world. These races are designed to test the endurance and resilience of participants as they navigate through diverse terrains and extreme weather conditions. The series includes the 4 Deserts Ultramarathon Series and the RacingThePlanet Ultramarathon.

Overview

RacingThePlanet was founded in 2002 by Mary K Gadams, an avid ultramarathon runner and entrepreneur. The organization is headquartered in Hong Kong and has gained a reputation for organizing some of the most challenging and scenic ultramarathons globally. The races are typically 250 kilometers long and are held over seven days, with participants required to be self-sufficient, carrying their own food and equipment.

4 Deserts Ultramarathon Series

The 4 Deserts Ultramarathon Series is a collection of four 250-kilometer races that take place in the world's most extreme deserts. These include the Atacama Desert in Chile, the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, the Sahara Desert in Namibia, and Antarctica. Each race presents unique challenges, from the scorching heat of the Sahara to the freezing temperatures of Antarctica.

Atacama Crossing

The Atacama Crossing is held in the Atacama Desert, known as the driest place on Earth. Participants face high altitudes, salt flats, and rocky terrain. The race is a test of endurance and adaptability as runners navigate through one of the harshest environments.

Gobi March

The Gobi March takes place in the Gobi Desert, featuring a mix of sand dunes, grasslands, and riverbeds. The race is known for its cultural richness, as it passes through remote villages and historical sites.

Sahara Race

The Sahara Race is set in the vast and arid Sahara Desert. Participants must endure extreme heat and sandstorms while traversing endless sand dunes and rocky plateaus.

The Last Desert

The Last Desert is the only multi-stage race in Antarctica. It is a unique challenge due to the cold temperatures, icy terrain, and unpredictable weather conditions. This race is only open to those who have completed at least two of the other 4 Deserts races.

RacingThePlanet Ultramarathon

In addition to the 4 Deserts Series, RacingThePlanet organizes an annual "Roving Race" that takes place in a new location each year. These races are designed to showcase the natural beauty and cultural diversity of different regions around the world. Past locations have included Iceland, Madagascar, and Georgia.

Participation and Community

RacingThePlanet attracts a diverse group of participants from all over the world, ranging from elite ultramarathon runners to adventure enthusiasts. The races foster a strong sense of community and camaraderie among participants, volunteers, and local communities. Many participants return year after year to take on new challenges and reconnect with fellow racers.
