RaDonda Vaught (pronounced: rah-don-da vawt) is a former nurse from the United States who was involved in a high-profile medical malpractice case that resulted in a patient's death.

Etymology

The name RaDonda is of American origin, while Vaught is a surname of English origin.

Background

RaDonda Vaught was a nurse at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. In December 2017, she mistakenly administered a lethal dose of Vecuronium (a powerful paralytic drug) instead of Versed (a sedative), to a patient who was undergoing a routine CT scan. The patient, Charlene Murphey, went into cardiac arrest and died.

Legal Proceedings

In February 2019, Vaught was indicted on charges of reckless homicide and elder abuse. Her case drew national attention, sparking debates about the criminalization of medical errors. Vaught pleaded not guilty, and her trial began in 2021.

Outcome

In November 2021, Vaught was found guilty of criminally negligent homicide and abuse of an impaired adult. She was sentenced to years of probation and community service.
