R bodies
R bodies are unique, proteinaceous inclusions found within certain bacteria, specifically within the cytoplasm of Paramecium endosymbionts, such as Caedibacter taeniospiralis. These structures are remarkable for their role in the biology of their host organisms and their unique physical properties. R bodies are tightly coiled ribbons that can uncoil rapidly when exposed to certain environmental triggers. This uncoiling mechanism is thought to be a defensive strategy against predation, providing a survival advantage to the host organism.
Structure and Composition
R bodies are composed primarily of proteins. They are characterized by their ability to transition from a tightly coiled state to an extended, thread-like form.
