Queen Anne's Revenge
Flagship of the pirate Blackbeard
Queen Anne's Revenge was a frigate that served as the flagship of the infamous pirate Blackbeard. Originally named La Concorde, the ship was a French slave vessel before being captured by Blackbeard and his crew in 1717. After its capture, the ship was refitted and renamed Queen Anne's Revenge.
History
La Concorde was built in 1710 and used by the French as a slave ship. In November 1717, the ship was captured by Blackbeard near the island of Saint Vincent. Blackbeard refitted the ship, increasing its armament to 40 guns, and renamed it Queen Anne's Revenge.
Pirate Career
Under Blackbeard's command, Queen Anne's Revenge became one of the most feared pirate ships of the Golden Age of Piracy. The ship was involved in numerous attacks along the American and Caribbean coasts. One of the most notable events was the blockade of Charleston in May 1718, where Blackbeard and his crew held the city hostage for a ransom of medical supplies.
Fate
In June 1718, Queen Anne's Revenge ran aground on a sandbar near Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina. The ship was abandoned, and Blackbeard continued his piratical activities with a smaller crew and vessel. The wreck of Queen Anne's Revenge was discovered in 1996, and ongoing archaeological efforts have recovered numerous artifacts from the site.
Legacy
Queen Anne's Revenge remains one of the most famous pirate ships in history. The ship's story has been featured in various books, films, and other media, contributing to the enduring legend of Blackbeard.
