Pyronaridine

Pyronaridine (pronunciation: py-ro-nar-di-ne) is an antimalarial drug used in the treatment of malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Pyronaridine is often used in combination with artesunate, another antimalarial drug, in a treatment known as Pyronaridine-Artesunate.

Etymology

The term "Pyronaridine" is derived from the chemical name 4-[(10Z)-3-(dibutylamino)-10-[(4-methoxyphenyl)imino]-7-(pyridin-4-yl)-2,3,5,10-tetrahydro-1H,4H,10H-[1,3]dioxino[6,5-b:5',6'-g]quinolin-1-yl]phenol. The name is a combination of its chemical structure and its medicinal use.

Usage

Pyronaridine is used in the treatment of malaria, specifically for the treatment of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax infections. It is often used in combination with artesunate in a treatment known as Pyronaridine-Artesunate.
