Psammoma body
Psammoma body
Psammoma body (pronunciation: /sæˈmoʊmə/; etymology: from the Greek word 'psammos' meaning sand) is a round, concentrically layered, calcified structure found in certain pathological conditions, particularly in some types of cancer and tumors.
Definition
A Psammoma body is a microscopic finding in certain diseases. They are small, round, concentrically layered structures that are often associated with certain types of neoplasms, particularly papillary thyroid carcinoma, serous cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary, meningioma, and mesothelioma. They are also found in some benign conditions such as meningioma and papillary endothelial hyperplasia.
Characteristics
Psammoma bodies are typically less than 1 mm in diameter and are composed of concentric layers of calcium salts. They are often associated with areas of necrosis or apoptosis, and their presence can be a sign of a more aggressive tumor behavior.
Clinical Significance
The presence of Psammoma bodies can be a diagnostic clue in certain types of cancers. They are particularly common in papillary thyroid carcinoma, where they are found in up to 50% of cases. They are also frequently seen in serous cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary and meningioma. Their presence in a biopsy sample can help pathologists make a diagnosis.
