From Food & Medicine Encyclopedia

(Redirected from Prostates)

Metic (Greek: μέτοικος, métoikos) refers to a resident alien in ancient Greece, particularly in the city-state of Athens. Metics were non-citizens who lived in a Greek city-state and were granted certain privileges and responsibilities. They played a significant role in the economic and cultural life of the city.

Status and Rights[edit]

Metics were typically free individuals who had migrated from other city-states or regions. They were not granted full citizenship but were allowed to live and work in the city. Metics were required to register with the local authorities and pay a special tax called the metoikion. They were also obligated to have a citizen sponsor, known as a prostates.

Despite their non-citizen status, metics could engage in various economic activities, including trade and craftsmanship. They were often involved in commerce and industry, contributing significantly to the city's economy. However, they were excluded from political rights, such as voting and holding public office.

Obligations[edit]

Metics had several obligations, including military service. They were required to serve in the Athenian army and navy during times of war. Additionally, they had to pay the metoikion tax annually and were subject to other financial contributions, such as the eisphora, a tax levied during wartime.

Legal Status[edit]

In legal matters, metics had limited rights compared to citizens. They could not own land or property outright but could lease it. Metics had access to the courts but often needed a citizen to represent them in legal proceedings. They were also subject to different penalties and fines compared to citizens.

Cultural Contributions[edit]

Metics made significant cultural contributions to Athenian society. Many were skilled artisans, merchants, and intellectuals who brought diverse perspectives and expertise to the city. Notable metics included philosophers, artists, and writers who influenced Athenian culture and thought.

Famous Metics[edit]

Some well-known metics in ancient Athens include:

  • Anaxagoras - A pre-Socratic philosopher who introduced new ideas about cosmology and science.
  • Lysias - A famous logographer (speechwriter) known for his legal speeches.
  • Pasion - A wealthy banker and benefactor of Athens.
