Prialt
Prialt
Prialt (pronounced: pree-alt), also known as Ziconotide, is a type of analgesic medication used in the management of severe chronic pain. It is derived from the venom of a marine snail species known as Conus magus.
Pronunciation
Prialt is pronounced as "pree-alt".
Etymology
The name "Prialt" is a brand name for the drug Ziconotide. The generic name, Ziconotide, is derived from the scientific name of the marine cone snail (Conus magus) from which it is sourced, and the suffix "-otide", which is commonly used in the names of peptides.
Usage
Prialt is used for the management of severe chronic pain in patients for whom intrathecal (IT) therapy is warranted, and who are intolerant of or refractory to other treatments, such as systemic analgesics, adjunctive therapies, or IT morphine.
Mechanism of Action
Prialt works by blocking N-type voltage-sensitive calcium channels, which are located on the primary nociceptive (pain) nerves in the spinal cord. This action inhibits the release of pain neurotransmitter substances like substance P and glutamate, thereby reducing the transmission of pain signals to the brain.
