Press Release

A Press Release (pronounced: press re-lease) is a written communication directed at members of the news media for the purpose of announcing something ostensibly newsworthy.

Etymology

The term "Press Release" is derived from the practice of releasing information to the press, with "press" referring to the print media and "release" indicating the dissemination of information.

Definition

A Press Release is a short, compelling news story written by a public relations professional and sent to targeted members of the media. The goal of a press release is to pique the interest of a journalist or publication. The press release should contain all the essential information (who, what, where, when, why and how) for the journalist to easily produce his own story.

Components of a Press Release

A typical press release includes the following components:

  • Headline: The headline is the title of the press release, which should be clear, concise and attention-grabbing.
  • Dateline: The dateline contains the release date and usually the originating city of the press release.
  • Introduction: The introduction is where the real news value is. It should contain a detailed summary of the news.
  • Body: The body provides further explanation and information, including quotes, background information, statistics, etc.
  • Boilerplate: The boilerplate is a short paragraph that tells about the identity of the company and what it does.
  • Contact Information: The contact information of the person who the media can contact for more information.

Related Terms

  • News Release: A news release is similar to a press release, but it is intended for the general public rather than the media.
  • Media Advisory: A media advisory is a brief notification to the media about an upcoming event, such as a press conference.
  • Public Relations: Public relations is the practice of managing and disseminating information from an individual or an organization to the public.
