Powys Teaching Health Board
Powys Teaching Health Board (PTHB) is the local health board of Powys, Wales. It is responsible for providing healthcare services to the residents of Powys, which is a predominantly rural area. The health board is unique in Wales as it does not have a district general hospital within its boundaries, relying instead on a network of community hospitals and primary care services.
History
Powys Teaching Health Board was established in 2009 as part of the reorganization of the National Health Service (NHS) Wales. It was formed by merging the former Powys Local Health Board and the Powys Healthcare NHS Trust.
Services
PTHB provides a wide range of healthcare services, including:
- Primary care services through general practitioners (GPs), dentists, optometrists, and pharmacists.
- Community health services such as district nursing, health visiting, and community mental health services.
- Community hospitals that offer inpatient care, minor injury units, and outpatient services.
- Public health initiatives aimed at improving the overall health and well-being of the population.
Community Hospitals
The health board operates several community hospitals, including:
- Brecon War Memorial Hospital
- Llandrindod Wells Hospital
- Machynlleth Community Hospital
- Newtown Hospital
- Ystradgynlais Community Hospital
These hospitals provide essential services such as minor injury units, outpatient clinics, and inpatient care.
Primary Care
Primary care services in Powys are delivered through a network of GP practices, dental practices, optometry services, and community pharmacies. The health board works closely with these providers to ensure comprehensive care for the population.
Public Health
PTHB is involved in various public health initiatives, including vaccination programs, health promotion campaigns, and efforts to reduce health inequalities. The board collaborates with local authorities and other organizations to address public health challenges.
Governance
The health board is governed by a board of directors, which includes executive and non-executive members. The board is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the organization and ensuring that it meets its objectives.
