Postpartum chills

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Postpartum chills are a common symptom experienced by women after childbirth. They are characterized by a feeling of coldness, shivering, and sometimes accompanied by a fever.

Causes

The exact cause of postpartum chills is not known, but it is believed to be related to the hormonal changes that occur in the body after childbirth. Other factors that may contribute to postpartum chills include fatigue, loss of blood, and the physical exertion of labor.

Symptoms

The main symptom of postpartum chills is a feeling of coldness and shivering. This can occur immediately after childbirth or within the first few hours. Some women may also experience a fever, fatigue, and a general feeling of being unwell.

Treatment

Treatment for postpartum chills usually involves keeping the mother warm and comfortable. This can be achieved through the use of blankets, warm clothing, and hot drinks. If the chills are accompanied by a fever, then medication may be prescribed to reduce the fever.

Prevention

There is no specific way to prevent postpartum chills, but maintaining a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy and after childbirth can help to reduce the risk. This includes eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, and getting plenty of rest.
