The Portuguese language (língua portuguesa) is a Romance language originating in the Iberian Peninsula of Europe. It is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Angola, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
Pronunciation
In English, the Portuguese language is pronounced as /pɔːrtʃʊˈɡiːz/. In Portuguese, it is pronounced as [liˈɡwɐ puɾtuˈɣezɐ].
Etymology
The term "Portuguese" comes from the Latin Portus Cale, the name of an ancient town and port in modern-day northern Portugal. The language evolved from the medieval language, known today by linguists as Galician-Portuguese or Old Portuguese.
