Podocarpus elatus

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Podocarpus elatus is a species of conifer in the family Podocarpaceae. It is commonly known as the Plum Pine or the Brown Pine and is native to the east coast of Australia, from Queensland to New South Wales.

Description

Podocarpus elatus is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 40 meters tall. The bark is rough and brown, while the leaves are narrow, leathery, and dark green. The tree produces small, yellow flowers in the spring, followed by purple, plum-like fruits in the autumn. These fruits are edible and have a sweet taste.

Habitat and Distribution

Podocarpus elatus is found in rainforests and moist eucalyptus forests. It prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate both full sun and partial shade. The species is distributed along the east coast of Australia, from the Wet Tropics of Queensland to the Sydney region in New South Wales.

Uses

The timber of Podocarpus elatus is highly valued for its durability and resistance to termites. It is used in construction, furniture making, and boat building. The fruits are edible and can be used in jams, jellies, and wines.

Conservation

Podocarpus elatus is not currently considered to be at risk of extinction. However, its habitat is threatened by deforestation and urban development. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting its habitat and promoting sustainable harvesting of its timber and fruits.

Cultivation

Podocarpus elatus is cultivated as an ornamental tree for its attractive foliage and edible fruits. It is also used in bonsai and as a screening plant in landscaping.
