Pocket mask
Pocket mask
A pocket mask (pronounced: pɒkɪt mæsk) is a device used in resuscitation to safely deliver rescue breaths during a cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest.
Etymology
The term "pocket mask" is derived from its compact size that allows it to be carried in a pocket. The word "pocket" comes from the Middle English word "poket," meaning a small bag, which is a diminutive of the Old North French word "poke." The word "mask" originates from the Middle French word "masque," which means a covering to hide or guard the face.
Usage
The pocket mask is used by first responders, healthcare providers, and any trained personnel in a situation where cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is needed. The mask is placed over the patient's face, creating a seal to prevent air leakage. The rescuer can then breathe into a one-way valve at the top of the mask to provide the patient with oxygen.
