Pilates (/pɪˈlɑːtiːz/; German: [piˈlaːtəs]) is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, after whom it was named.

The term "Pilates" comes from the name of its creator, Joseph Pilates, a German physical trainer. He developed the system in the early 20th century as a way to rehabilitate injured soldiers during World War I.
