Pidotimod[edit]

Chemical structure of Pidotimod

Pidotimod is an immunostimulant used primarily in the treatment of respiratory tract infections and other conditions where immune modulation is beneficial. It is a synthetic dipeptide molecule that enhances the body's immune response by stimulating both the innate and adaptive immune systems.

Mechanism of Action[edit]

Pidotimod acts by modulating the immune system. It enhances the activity of macrophages, dendritic cells, and natural killer cells, which are crucial components of the innate immune system. Additionally, it promotes the maturation and function of T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes, thereby supporting the adaptive immune response. This dual action helps in improving the body's defense against infections.

Clinical Uses[edit]

Pidotimod is primarily used in the management of recurrent respiratory tract infections, particularly in children and the elderly. It is also used in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other conditions where immune support is needed. By enhancing the immune response, pidotimod helps reduce the frequency and severity of infections.

Administration and Dosage[edit]

Pidotimod is administered orally, and the dosage varies depending on the age of the patient and the severity of the condition. It is typically given in cycles, with periods of treatment followed by breaks, to optimize immune stimulation without causing overstimulation.

Side Effects[edit]

Pidotimod is generally well-tolerated, with few reported side effects. Some patients may experience mild gastrointestinal disturbances, such as nausea or diarrhea. Rarely, allergic reactions may occur.
