Photosynthetic
Photosynthetic
Photosynthetic (pronunciation: /ˌfoʊtoʊsɪnˈθɛtɪk/) is an adjective that describes the process of photosynthesis, a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy, usually from the sun, into chemical energy that can be later released to fuel the organisms' activities.
Etymology
The term "photosynthetic" is derived from the Greek words "phōs" (light) and "synthesis" (putting together). It was first used in the 1890s to describe the process by which plants convert light into energy.
Related Terms

- Chlorophyll: The green pigment found in cyanobacteria and the chloroplasts of algae and plants. Its name is derived from the Greek words "chloros" (green) and "phyllon" (leaf).
- Light Energy: The form of energy that is made by the sun and that powers photosynthesis.
- Chemical Energy: The potential of a chemical substance to undergo a transformation through a chemical reaction to transform other chemical substances.
- Cyanobacteria: A phylum of bacteria that obtain their energy through photosynthesis, and are the only photosynthetic prokaryotes able to produce oxygen.
- Chloroplast: An organelle found in plant and algae cells where photosynthesis occurs.
- Algae: A simple, non-flowering, and typically aquatic plant of a large group that includes the seaweeds and many single-celled forms. Algae contain chlorophyll but lack true stems, roots, leaves, and vascular tissue.
- Prokaryotes: A microscopic single-celled organism that has neither a distinct nucleus with a membrane nor other specialized organelles.
