History

Philadelphia Cream Cheese was first developed in 1872 by American dairyman William Lawrence. Lawrence, based in Chester, New York, was attempting to recreate a French cheese called Neufchâtel. In 1903, the Phenix Cheese Company bought the brand and the rights to the Philadelphia Cream Cheese name. Phenix was later absorbed by the Kraft Foods Inc., which continues to produce Philadelphia Cream Cheese today.
