Phi Delta Chi
American professional fraternity for pharmacy students
Phi Delta Chi (ΦΔΧ) is a professional fraternity for pharmacy students and pharmacists. Founded on November 2, 1883, at the University of Michigan, it is one of the oldest and largest pharmacy fraternities in the United States. The fraternity's mission is to advance the science of pharmacy and foster a spirit of brotherhood among its members.
History
Phi Delta Chi was established by 11 men at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. The founders were Albert Benjamin Prescott, Franklin Herbert Frazee, Llewellyn Hall Gardner, Calvin Pomeroy Godfrey, Adolph Gustave Hoffman, Arthur Gilliam Hopper, Charles Edward Bond, George Pawling Leamon, Arthur Sidney Rogers, Azor Thurston, and Charles F. Hueber. The fraternity was originally named Phi Chi, but due to a conflict with a medical fraternity of the same name, it was changed to Phi Delta Chi in 1910.
Mission and Values
The mission of Phi Delta Chi is to develop leaders to advance the profession of pharmacy. The fraternity emphasizes the values of leadership, professionalism, and service. Members are encouraged to engage in community service, professional development, and lifelong learning.
Structure and Organization
Phi Delta Chi is governed by a Grand Council, which consists of elected officers and representatives from each chapter. The fraternity is divided into regions, each overseen by a Regional Director. The Grand Council meets biennially to discuss fraternity business and set policies.
Chapters
Phi Delta Chi has over 100 active chapters across the United States. Each chapter is located at a college or university with a pharmacy program. Chapters are responsible for organizing local events, community service projects, and professional development activities.
Membership
Membership in Phi Delta Chi is open to pharmacy students and pharmacists. Prospective members must demonstrate a commitment to the profession of pharmacy and the values of the fraternity. Members are expected to participate actively in fraternity events and uphold the fraternity's standards of conduct.
Activities and Programs
Phi Delta Chi offers a variety of programs and activities for its members, including leadership development workshops, networking events, and community service projects. The fraternity also hosts an annual Leadership Development Seminar and a biennial Grand Council meeting.
Symbols and Traditions
The official colors of Phi Delta Chi are Old Gold and Dregs of Wine. The fraternity's badge is a gold shield with the Greek letters ΦΔΧ. The fraternity's motto is "Alterum Alterius Auxilio Eget," which means "Each Needs the Help of the Other."
