Permatemp

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Permatemp is a term used to describe a worker who is employed in a temporary or contract position for an extended period of time. The term is a portmanteau of "permanent" and "temporary".

Definition

A Permatemp is a temporary employee who works for an extended period for a single staffing client. The word is a blend of the words 'permanent' and 'temporary'. There are no set guidelines for how long a temporary assignment can last, which is why some people can remain in temporary positions for years.

Legal Issues

In the United States, permatemping can lead to legal issues for companies. This is because the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Department of Labor have specific rules regarding the classification of employees. If a company is found to be misclassifying employees as permatemps to avoid paying benefits or taxes, it can face penalties.

Advantages and Disadvantages

There are both advantages and disadvantages to being a permatemp. On the positive side, it can provide a degree of job security without the commitment of a permanent position. It can also provide flexibility and variety in work. On the negative side, permatemps often do not receive the same benefits as permanent employees, such as health insurance, paid time off, and retirement plans.
