Perfluorooctane

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Perfluorooctane is a type of perfluorocarbon (PFC), which is a compound consisting of carbon and fluorine. It is a colorless, odorless liquid that is used in a variety of medical and industrial applications due to its unique properties.

Chemical Properties

Perfluorooctane is a fully fluorinated eight-carbon molecule. It is chemically and biologically inert, meaning it does not react with other substances or break down in the body. It is also hydrophobic and lipophobic, meaning it does not mix with water or fats. These properties make it useful in a variety of applications.

Medical Uses

Perfluorooctane is used in several medical procedures, particularly in ophthalmology. It is used as a temporary tamponade during retinal detachment surgery to flatten the retina and remove subretinal fluid. It is also used in the treatment of macular holes.

In addition to its use in ophthalmology, perfluorooctane is used in liquid ventilation, a type of medical treatment where the lungs are filled with a liquid rather than air. This is used in cases of severe respiratory distress syndrome, where the lungs are not able to provide sufficient oxygen to the body.

Industrial Uses

Perfluorooctane is used in the electronics industry as a coolant and insulator. It is also used in the production of fluoropolymers, which are used in a variety of applications including non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, and electrical insulation.

Safety

Perfluorooctane is generally considered safe for use in medical procedures. However, it can cause temporary vision disturbances if it comes into contact with the eye. It is also not intended for long-term use in the body, as it can cause inflammation and other complications if not removed after a certain period of time.
