Patuakhali Medical College (pronunciation: pəˈtuːəkɑːli mɛdɪkəl ˈkɒlɪdʒ) is a government medical college in Bangladesh, which is affiliated with the University of Dhaka.
Etymology
The name "Patuakhali" is derived from the Bengali words "Patua" (meaning 'artist') and "Khali" (meaning 'canal'). The "Medical College" part of the name refers to its function as an institution for the study of medicine.
History
Patuakhali Medical College was established in 2008. It is one of the 36 public medical colleges in Bangladesh. The college is located in Patuakhali, a district in the Barisal Division of southern Bangladesh.
Academics
The college offers a five-year course of study, approved by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC), leading to a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from Dhaka University. After passing the final professional examination, there is a compulsory one-year internship. The internship is a prerequisite for obtaining registration from the BMDC to practice medicine.
