Paraguay (pronunciation: /ˈpærəɡwaɪ/), officially the Republic of Paraguay (Spanish: República del Paraguay; Guarani: Tetã Paraguái), is a country in South America. It is bordered by Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the east and northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest.
Etymology
The name "Paraguay" is derived from the Guarani word "pararaguay", which means "river that gives birth to the sea". The name refers to the Paraguay River, which divides the country into two regions: Eastern Paraguay (Paranena) and Western Paraguay (Chaco).
