Pancratistatin (pronounced pan-kra-tis-ta-tin) is a natural compound derived from the Amaryllidaceae family of plants, specifically the Hymenocallis littoralis species, also known as the spider lily.
Etymology
The term "Pancratistatin" is derived from the genus name of the plant, Pancratium, from which it was first isolated. The suffix "-statin" is commonly used in the naming of pharmaceutical compounds that inhibit or reduce a specific biological function.
Description
Pancratistatin is a non-toxic, anti-cancer agent that has been shown to induce apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in various types of cancer cells. It is a unique compound due to its ability to selectively target and kill cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed.
