PTEN gene - gene that makes a protein involved in controlling many cell functions, including cell division and cell death. The PTEN protein may also be involved in cell movement, attachment of cells to surrounding tissue, and the formation of new blood vessels. Mutations (changes) in the PTEN gene have been found in many types of cancer and in several diseases in which people develop benign (noncancerous) tumors. The PTEN gene is a type of tumor suppressor gene
