PLOS Currents was an open-access journal published by the Public Library of Science (PLOS) that focused on rapid dissemination of research findings in the fields of medicine and biology. The journal was operational from 2009 until 2018.
History
PLOS Currents was launched in 2009 as an innovative platform to quickly share new scientific research and ideas. It was designed to complement the traditional peer-reviewed journal model by allowing researchers to publish their findings rapidly. The journal utilized a streamlined review process to ensure that important scientific information could be shared with the community without delay.
Scope and Content
The journal covered a wide range of topics within the fields of medicine and biology, including but not limited to infectious diseases, genomics, epidemiology, and public health. PLOS Currents was particularly known for its focus on emerging topics and urgent research areas that required immediate dissemination.
Publication Model
PLOS Currents employed a unique publication model that combined elements of traditional peer review with more rapid, community-based evaluation. Articles were initially screened by a group of expert editors and then made available online for public comment and further review. This model allowed for a dynamic and interactive approach to scientific publishing.
Closure
In 2018, PLOS Currents ceased publication. The decision to close the journal was part of a broader strategic shift by PLOS to focus on its core journals and other new initiatives. Despite its closure, the articles published in PLOS Currents remain accessible online, continuing to contribute to the scientific community.
