Obstetrics

Obstetrics (pronunciation: /ɒbˈstɛtrɪks/) is a branch of medicine that deals with the care of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the recuperative period following delivery. The term is derived from the Latin word 'obstare', which means 'to stand by'.
