Becker began his career as an assistant to the renowned ophthalmologist Friedrich Jäger von Jaxtthal in Vienna. His work in Vienna allowed him to gain valuable experience and knowledge in the field of ophthalmology. In 1867, Becker was appointed as a professor of ophthalmology at the University of Heidelberg, where he established a reputation as a leading expert in eye diseases.
During his tenure at Heidelberg, Becker focused on the study of cataracts, glaucoma, and other eye conditions. He was particularly interested in the pathological aspects of eye diseases and conducted extensive research on the histology of the eye. Becker's work laid the foundation for modern ophthalmic pathology and contributed significantly to the understanding of various eye disorders.
Contributions to Ophthalmology[edit]
Becker is best known for his research on the anatomy and pathology of the eye. He published numerous papers and books on the subject, including a comprehensive textbook on ophthalmology that was widely used by medical students and practitioners. His work on the histological examination of the eye provided valuable insights into the development and progression of eye diseases.
One of Becker's notable contributions was his research on the Becker's muscular dystrophy, a condition named after him. Although primarily known for his work in ophthalmology, Becker's research extended to other areas of medicine, demonstrating his broad interest in medical science.
