Orville Redenbacher's
Orville Redenbacher's
Orville Redenbacher's is a brand of popcorn that was first introduced to the public in 1970. The brand was named after its founder, Orville Redenbacher, who was a real person and not a fictional character.
History
Orville Redenbacher was an American businessman most recognized for the brand of popcorn that bears his name. He was born on July 16, 1907, in Brazil, Indiana. Redenbacher spent most of his life in the agriculture industry, specifically focusing on creating a hybrid popcorn that would pop up lighter and fluffier than most available brands.
In 1951, he and his partner, Charlie Bowman, bought the George F. Chester and Son seed corn plant near Valparaiso, Indiana. They named their company "Chester Hybrids," and spent a significant amount of time and effort in the research and development of a new strain of popcorn.
Product Development
After years of cross-breeding, Redenbacher and Bowman developed a popcorn hybrid that was light, fluffy, and popped up bigger than typical popcorn. They were ready to introduce their product to the public in 1970.
The popcorn was initially launched under the brand name "RedBow," a combination of Redenbacher and Bowman's last names. However, the product did not sell well under this name. After consulting with a marketing expert, they decided to rename the product "Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn."
Success and Acquisition
The rebranding was a success, and Orville Redenbacher's popcorn quickly became a best-seller. Redenbacher himself became the face of the brand, appearing in television commercials and print advertisements.
In 1976, the company was sold to Hunt-Wesson Foods, a division of Norton Simon Inc. This allowed the brand to reach a wider audience and further increase its popularity. Today, Orville Redenbacher's is owned by Conagra Brands, who continue to produce a variety of popcorn products under the Orville Redenbacher's name.
Legacy
Orville Redenbacher passed away in 1995, but his legacy lives on through his popcorn. The brand continues to be a leader in the popcorn industry, known for its quality and taste. Orville Redenbacher's offers a variety of products, including original popcorn, microwave popcorn, and ready-to-eat popcorn.
