Ortrugo
Italian white wine grape variety
Ortrugo is a white wine grape variety native to the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy. It is primarily grown in the Piacenza province and is known for producing light, refreshing wines that are often enjoyed young. Ortrugo is a key component in the production of the Colli Piacentini DOC wines.
History
Ortrugo has a long history in the Piacenza area, where it was traditionally used as a blending grape. It was often mixed with other local varieties to add acidity and freshness to the wines. In recent decades, however, Ortrugo has gained recognition as a varietal wine in its own right, appreciated for its unique characteristics.
Viticulture
Ortrugo vines are well-suited to the clay and limestone soils of the Piacenza hills. The grape is known for its vigorous growth and high yields. It ripens relatively early, which helps it retain its natural acidity, a desirable trait for producing crisp, refreshing wines.
Wine Regions
The primary region for Ortrugo cultivation is the Colli Piacentini DOC, which encompasses the hilly areas around Piacenza. Within this DOC, Ortrugo is used to produce both still and sparkling wines. The wines are typically light-bodied with floral and fruity aromas.
Wine Characteristics
Ortrugo wines are known for their pale straw color and delicate aromas. Common flavor notes include green apple, pear, and citrus, with a hint of floral undertones. The wines are typically dry, with a crisp acidity that makes them refreshing and easy to drink. Sparkling versions of Ortrugo are also popular, offering a lively effervescence that enhances the wine's fresh character.
Food Pairing
Ortrugo wines pair well with a variety of dishes, particularly those from the Emilia-Romagna region. They complement light appetizers, seafood, and salads. The wine's acidity also makes it a good match for creamy pasta dishes and soft cheeses.
