The orbital part of the inferior frontal gyrus is a region of the frontal lobe of the human brain. It is one of the three parts of the inferior frontal gyrus, the other two being the triangular part and the opercular part.

Anatomy[edit]

The orbital part of the inferior frontal gyrus is located in the frontal lobe, which is the largest lobe of the brain. It is situated inferiorly and anteriorly in the frontal lobe, near the orbital surface of the frontal lobe, which is the part of the frontal lobe that lies above the orbits of the eyes.

The orbital part is bordered by the lateral sulcus (also known as the Sylvian fissure) superiorly, and it is continuous with the orbital gyri on the orbital surface of the frontal lobe. It is separated from the triangular part of the inferior frontal gyrus by the anterior horizontal ramus of the lateral sulcus.

Function[edit]

The orbital part of the inferior frontal gyrus is involved in various cognitive functions, including language processing, decision making, and social cognition. It is part of the Broca's area, which is traditionally associated with language production and processing.

This region is also implicated in the processing of emotions and the regulation of social behavior. It is thought to play a role in the integration of sensory information with emotional and social cues, which is crucial for appropriate social interactions.

Clinical significance[edit]

Damage to the orbital part of the inferior frontal gyrus can result in deficits in language production, such as Broca's aphasia, where individuals have difficulty in speech production but can often understand language. It may also affect decision-making processes and social behavior, leading to changes in personality and social conduct.
