== Optical Disc ==

An optical disc is a flat, circular disc that encodes binary data in the form of pits and lands on its surface. These discs are read and written using a laser, which interprets the reflections from the disc's surface to retrieve or store data. Optical discs are commonly used for storing music, video, and computer data.

Types of Optical Discs[edit]

There are several types of optical discs, each with its own storage capacity and use cases:

Compact Disc (CD)[edit]

The Compact Disc (CD) was one of the first optical disc formats to gain widespread popularity. It typically holds up to 700 MB of data or 80 minutes of audio.

Digital Versatile Disc (DVD)[edit]

The Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) offers higher storage capacity than CDs, typically holding 4.7 GB of data on a single-layer disc and up to 8.5 GB on a dual-layer disc. DVDs are commonly used for video and data storage.

Blu-ray Disc (BD)[edit]

The Blu-ray Disc (BD) provides even greater storage capacity, with single-layer discs holding 25 GB and dual-layer discs holding 50 GB. Blu-ray discs are often used for high-definition video and data storage.

Ultra HD Blu-ray[edit]

Ultra HD Blu-ray discs offer even higher storage capacities and support 4K resolution video, providing a superior viewing experience.

Technology[edit]

Optical discs use a laser to read and write data. The laser beam is directed onto the surface of the disc, where it encounters pits and lands. The differences in reflectivity between pits and lands are interpreted as binary data.

Applications[edit]

Optical discs have a wide range of applications, including:

Advantages and Disadvantages[edit]

Advantages[edit]

  • High storage capacity
  • Durability and longevity
  • Portability

Disadvantages[edit]

  • Susceptibility to scratches and damage
  • Slower read/write speeds compared to some other storage media
  • Declining usage due to the rise of cloud storage and USB flash drives
