Omdurman
Omdurman (Arabic: أم درمان) is the largest city in Sudan and the capital of Khartoum State. It is situated on the western banks of the Nile River, opposite the capital, Khartoum. Omdurman has a rich history that intertwines with the history of Sudan itself, serving as the center of the Mahdist State in the late 19th century, and it was the site of the pivotal Battle of Omdurman in 1898.
History
Omdurman's history is marked by its role as the capital of the Mahdist State from 1885 to 1898. The city was founded as a village in the 15th century but gained prominence under the leadership of Muhammad Ahmad, who declared himself the Mahdi, the prophesied redeemer of Islam, in 1881. Under Mahdi's rule, Omdurman was transformed into the capital of his burgeoning empire, serving as a base for his conquests and the administration of the Mahdist State.
The Battle of Omdurman on September 2, 1898, was a turning point in Sudanese history. British and Egyptian forces under the command of Horatio Kitchener defeated the Mahdist forces, marking the end of the Mahdist State and the beginning of British-Egyptian rule in Sudan. The battle is notable for its significance in the history of warfare, being one of the earliest examples of modern military technology's impact on traditional warfare.
