Okinawa Prefecture
Okinawa Prefecture is a prefecture of Japan located in the Ryukyu Islands. It is the southernmost prefecture of Japan and includes hundreds of the Ryukyu Islands in a chain over 1,000 kilometers long. The capital of Okinawa Prefecture is Naha, which is located on Okinawa Island.
History[edit]
Okinawa Prefecture has a rich and complex history. It was originally an independent kingdom known as the Ryukyu Kingdom, which paid tribute to both China and Japan. In 1879, the Ryukyu Kingdom was annexed by Japan and became Okinawa Prefecture. During World War II, Okinawa was the site of the Battle of Okinawa, one of the bloodiest battles of the war.
Geography[edit]
Okinawa Prefecture is made up of over 150 islands, which are divided into three major groups: the Okinawa Islands, the Miyako Islands, and the Yaeyama Islands. The islands are known for their subtropical climate, with warm temperatures year-round.
Culture[edit]
Okinawa has a distinct culture that is different from mainland Japan. This includes its own dialect, Okinawan language, traditional music, and dance, known as Ryukyuan music and Ryukyuan dance. Okinawa is also famous for its unique cuisine, which includes dishes like Goya Champuru and Okinawa Soba.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Okinawa Prefecture is largely based on tourism, agriculture, and the presence of United States Armed Forces bases. Okinawa is a popular tourist destination, known for its beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and historic sites. The prefecture is also a major producer of sugar cane, tropical fruits, and vegetables.
